
Camu Camu is native of the Occidental Amazonian region. It blossoms during the period of floods in the Amazon. This perennial plant can reach up to 4 meters in height. Its flowers are white and the fruit can weigh 5 to 10 grams, 1.5-2.5 centimeters in diameter and have a dark red to purple color, very similar to the jabuticaba. Camu Camu tastes too acidic for humans to consume it in its natural form, however it smells very nice, and can be industrialized and used in many different products. This plant needs very humid soil. It can stay submersed for up 6 months in its natural habitat. Its reproduction is done through seeds and it has small durability for germination, resisting up to 45 days. The germination of its seeds is done in special and specific conditions. The plant initiates the production process of fruits in 18-24 months after the germination of the seeds. Very much rustic and easy to handle, it requires organic soil, high humidity and PH that is acidic to neutral.
Santa Luzia Experimental Station has initiated experiments on the adaptation and cultivation of the Camu Camu in the state of Sao Paulo in 2001, obtaining excellent results.
This fruit is known worldwide by pharmaceutics and cosmetic industries for being the fruit that contains the most ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the world.
Camu Camu contains vitamin C that is 20 times more concentrated than acerola and 100 times more than lemon, containing 5 grams of vitamin in every 100 grams of the fruit. It also contains, compared to oranges, 10 times more iron and 50% more phosphor.
The INPA – National Institute of Research in Amazonia has been conducting researches since 1993 through scientist and researcher Prof. Dr. Kaoru Yuyama, in the agronomic area, and the scientist and researcher Prof. Dr. Lucia Yuyama, in the nutritional area.
